Winter jogging? Are you nuts! Well...maybe. But this is a great way to stay fit.

You want to keep that sexy summer figure, right? Than get properly prepared.

Jogging remains the best cardiovascular exercise out there...even when done in the winter.

It challenges your body and it's inexpensive. You may wonder if this is an exercise option as the colder weather arrives. Thankfully, it is.

But...there are a few tips and tricks to help you do it successfully.

What's Your Winter Like?

Determine what "winter" means to you. Different geographic locations have milder or super cold winters.

In California, we enjoy mild winters. Jogging is considerably easier for us. We're not trudging through snow. But if you live in the north eastern part of the United States, such as Maine, your winter weather may keep you indoors.

As the temperature drops closer to zero and below, you'll need to be careful. Pulled muscles and frost bite could be a concern.

Be prepared when you're jogging outdoors.

Of course, treadmills remain an option. While this may get a little boring, spice things up a bit by heading outdoors for a challenge.

Consider these tips to stay safe.

Dress In Layers

If temperatures fall between zero and thirty two degrees Fahrenheit, layers will be your best friend.

Start with a tight fitting layer like long underwear. Add a layer of a warmer material, like sweats. Finish with a lighter pair of pants and a jacket to deflect the biting winter wind.

Materials

Layers are important, but so are the materials they're made of. Don't make the mistake of choosing cotton-based garments. Cotton tends to keep moisture in and can cause you to feel chilled.

Jogging naturally leads to sweating. Cotton holds that sweat leaving you covered in cold water. This is not only uncomfortable, but you could get sick.

Instead, use synthetic materials which are designed to pull water away from your skin.

Accessories

No outfit is complete without accessories, right? Well, the same can be said about your winter jogging wear.

Gloves are essential. It's no fun jogging with frozen fingers. A hat pulled down over your ears and neck will reduce heat loss. Wear a scarf or gaiter so you can breathe in warm air rather than the cold air.

Finally, don't forget about sunglasses. They're not to keep the sun out of your eyes. Use them to protect your eyes from strong winter winds and the glaring brightness of the snow.

  • Use moisturizer and sunblock. Even if it isn't sunny outside, use sunblock to avoid damaging UV rays. Moisturizer will be good for your face and hands, too.

Cooler weather means lower humidity. Cold weather jogging can take its toll on your skin.

  • Use lip balm with SPF 15 or higher.

  • Wear bright clothes and/or a safety vest with reflective tape. Drivers need to see you. Particularly if you're running where a side walk may not be available.

  • Don't push yourself to achieve new fitness levels. Cold weather jogging is for maintenance and to break up indoor workouts. It's not a time to push your body harder.

  • Jog indoors on a treadmill if it's too cold, freezing or icy outside.

  • Drink water or an electrolyte replacement regularly. Your body loses more water and electrolytes during cold weather exercise because of lower humidity.

Stay Motivated During Winter Jogging

  • Set a regular time to work out and stick to it. Invite a friend to join you so you get your work out done.

  • Talk to a friend or workout buddy daily. Even if you can’t get out to jog with them. Use the telephone to keep each other motivated. When the weather leads you to slouch on the couch, phone a friend. A pep talk can get you to jump up on your feet and get going.

Winter jogging is challenging. It won’t be easy to stay motivated, but friends can help. Stick to a routine and you won’t feel the after effects of a long indulgent holiday season.
