Running to Lose Weight

Running to lose weight is an ambitious goal.

It’s a great way to lose pounds but it takes commitment. It’s high impact and it's certainly done at a faster pace than a jog.

Of course, runners enjoy a faster metabolism since they're burning up lots of calories.

To make sure you're successful consider some of the important steps below. This way you'll shed pounds with a good running program.

Get Your Heart Rate Up

When running to lose weight, you've got to get your heart rate up. If not, you won't lose the pounds.

Running will get your heart working. You won't have to try hard at all to break a sweat.

However, you might want to figure out your optimal heart rate range. Find your maximum heart rate, and then exercise between 60-85% of the maximum.

Exercise below the 60-85% range won't burn off enough calories.

On the other hand, jacking your heart rate up too high burns carbs instead of fat. Plus, you may become winded, light headed and possibly pass out. It's best to maintain a comfortable pace.

Utilize a heart rate monitor. This will ensure you keep your heart in the correct and most effective range. You do want results, right? Stay in your range to achieve results.

Vary Your Effort

Remember, when running to lose weight vary your level of effort. Change up the intensity. This way you’ll burn more calories and fat. And, you won't have to run for hours.

Start out with a slower pace. Then add some spurts of high effort running for two minutes at a time. Finally, allow yourself to recover at a slower pace.

Add a few minutes of higher intensity in you running workout. It will help zap calories! You'll burn them longer and keep your muscles guessing.

Add variation and excitement to your running routine, too. Hills, intervals, grassy surfaces or changing up the tempo of the music you listen to can all help.

Eat Right

Eat right. Poor quality food equals poor results. Don't fall into the "I'm running so I can eat what I like" trap. This is an excuse to eat higher calorie, fatty foods.

When running to lose weight, practice eating a good diet. A balanced diet gives your body the fuel it needs while you're running.

Avoid eating more since it'll sabotage your weight loss plans.

Stay Motivated

Lastly, if you want to lose weight running, keep up your motivation. Running is a fairly easy form of exercise.

There is no special equipment.

No trips to the gym.

But this can make it a bit boring.

Find a way to stay motivated. Come up with fun and rewarding workouts. So when you achieve your goals, reward yourself. Whatever makes you happy and keeps you focused. This way you remain motivated to continue running.
