Running benefits give you all the right reasons to do this exercise.

Running is one of the most popular forms of fitness.

Because...

  • It takes no special skill.
  • You can begin at any time.
  • It's inexpensive.
  • It can be a social thing with friends.
  • Your dog can join you. I'm sure he/she would love to!
  • It's linked to better health, stronger bones and weight loss.
  • It makes you feel good about you.

Lots of us run simply for the joy of being outside and relishing our freedom. Children love to run. It's fun and exhilarating. As adults, running is a great way to relax from the day. Simply being able to focus on you; nothing else.

Just running...

The pounding against pavement or grass or dirt helps strengthen your bones, too. Since running is considered a weight bearing activity this is a good benefit. Not all of us take or have the time to lift weights for bone health. Running 20 or more miles a week is a good way to help with bone density.

Your heart will also thank you. Provided you don't have a heart condition (check with your doctor first), straining your cardiovascular system makes it stronger and better. Vigorous exercise such as running will strengthen your heart, lungs and build your endurance.

Running benefits include weight loss. Likely one of the most important reasons people take up running is to shed pounds. Runners always seem to sport a lean look. Speed is greatly improved with a leaner physique, naturally, but if you're heavier than you'd like running can help burn fat.

Whether you run on a treadmill or outdoors, you can enjoy weight loss through running. Treadmill running doesn't offer the same wind resistance you'd get from outdoor running, but incline your treadmill 1% and you'll get similar benefits.

A small incline challenges your body much the way the outdoors does.

There are lots of reasons to take up running. Doing something that makes you feel good about yourself is a great reason to begin. And, you'll lose weight, strengthen your cardio and improve your overall health along the way.
