There's not much cost involved with running. You do need a good pair of running shoes, however. This is the most basic requirement.

Don't skimp on the shoes, but don't mortgage your house either.

The Right Socks

No cotton socks. They retain sweat and cause blisters. Running socks on the other hand, keep your feet cool, dry, and comfortable.

Suiting Up

Choose light, comfortable clothes. Cotton outfits are cool but absorb sweat. Wet clothes can cause you to catch a chill. Instead, go for clothing made with Lycra. It's lightweight and keeps sweat away from your body.

Get Going

Build your endurance slowly before increasing intensity. Start with a brisk 10-minute walk. After that, jog for 30 seconds then walk for a minute. Keep at this for 30 minutes before calling it a day.

Do this routine three days a week for starters. Increase the time you run a little each week. This way you'll build stamina faster.

When you can finally run for a full 30 minutes, pick up the pace and run faster. And, be sure to practice good form to avoid injuries, strains and sprains.

When learning how to start running...

  • Run on dirt or asphalt roads. Concrete is hard on the body and increases injuries.
  • Run on the side of the road facing oncoming traffic. Know what's coming at you.
  • Your pace should allow you to carry a conversation.
  • Wear bright colored/reflective clothes especially at dawn or at night.
  • Warm up for 5 minutes.
  • Run 3 to 4 hours after a big meal. Your food will be digested.
  • Exercise your abs to strengthen stomach muscles.
