Definition of Physical Fitness. What's Good For You?

The definition of physical fitness and its importance to your health is significant.

Physical fitness is good for you. It's not only good for you but it's a low cost way to stay healthy. Being active helps keep you off medications and out of the doctor's office.

Most of us know someone with poor health. It's no fun to be going to the doctor routinely or taking all kinds of meds to stay well...or functional.

It's no secret that poor physical health drastically curtails enjoyment of life's most basic pursuits.

What Does the Research Say?

There extensive scientific research showing that being fit reduces our chances of developing:

  • heart disease,
  • cancer,
  • diabetes,
  • stroke, and
  • high blood pressure.

Some of these diseases and illnesses are very serious. They can take over your life and rob you of your independence and happiness.

A fit person generally experiences less hospital visits, less anxiety and reduced depression. And, fit people enjoy stronger bones, better mental health, muscles and joints.

Defining Physical Fitness

The definition of physical fitness then is: one's ability to carry out daily tasks with vigor and alertness, without undue fatigue, and with ample energy to enjoy leisure-time pursuits and respond to emergencies.

If you're unhealthy and unfit you're probably not performing daily tasks with energy and alertness. You're likely tired and unable to muster the energy necessary to enjoy the fun things in life.

The Facts

On average over half of Americans do not get enough physical activity to enjoy the benefits of physical fitness. According to the experts, 25% of Americans are not active at all. As we get older activity decreases and is less common among women than men.

This phenomenon is not particular to adults. More than a third of children in grades 9-12 are not physically active. We see more children are overweight as they prefer computers and electronic games these days to playing outdoors.

Why then is the definition of physical fitness important? Because as one doctor put it:

"It's easier to maintain your health than to regain it."

If you understand the definition of physical fitness and apply it to your life you'll be less likely to be sidelined with illness. And that means less doctor visits.

Establishing and maintaining your physical fitness is good for you. Being fit can prevent and treat many chronic health conditions brought on by an unhealthy lifestyle or aging. By being fit you'll be to (as the definition of physical fitness outlines) leisure-time pursuits with vigor and alertness.
