Alternatives to jogging offer a way for you to stay in shape. Many of us strive to get into better shape or to keep the physique we have, but jogging just may not work for you.
It makes the most sense to always consider a physical activity that interests you. Yes, weight loss may be a goal or reducing blood pressure or high cholesterol, but if you don't like the exercise you won't do it. And, at the end of the day, it's really important to feel satisfied with your exercise efforts.
If you find that jogging doesn't interest you or that your joints can't tolerate the high impact nature of this activity, consider the following alternatives.
Walking
This is the easiest exercise to implement since walking is a part of lives. We walk to work, to the store, the neighbor's house, to the school bus, to appointments, etc. Walking is an exercise that you're already doing and likely not experiencing any pain with it.
If this is the case for you, than consider walking at a more brisk pace (as though you were late for an appointment) to increase the cardiovascular value of your jaunt. Put aside leisure walking if fitness is your goal and step up the pace so that your heart rate climbs and your breathing quickens. This way you know you're getting a work out.
Swimming
This is a classic exercise to do if you have a pool or a nearby body of water available to you. Depending on where you live and the time of year, this is a terrific alternative to jogging since there is zero strain on your joints.
Water jogging is an easy way to get in shape and not suffer joint aches and pains. With a little resistance on your arms and feet you can get a challenging work out done and not break a sweat! Well you will break a sweat if you're pushing yourself, but at least the water will refresh you.
Bicycling
This sport offers a lot of freedom. You can bike pretty much any where and get a good work. You won't experience joint pain with this activity and you're lower body will get a tremendous work out. You can build endurance and strengthen your thighs and hamstrings while also tightening your bottom; all good things to achieve.
Hiking
Hiking can be a lot of fun, too, and it can be a lot of work. The very nature of this exercise keeps your body and muscles off balance due to the terrain your climbing. This is a good thing because you're cross-training and using muscles you wouldn't normally use in other activities.
Of course, you'll enjoy the view and flora as well.
Rock Climbing
Rock climbing can be a great work out. You can do this activity safely at an indoor gym. It's actually pretty challenging to pull yourself up particularly since you don't have much space to plant your feet. When considering alternatives to jogging this is a neat one.
This is an excellent upper and lower body work out. You'll be exhausted the first time, but if you stick with it, rock climbing can be a great way to mix up your work outs. Of course, too, if you're confident of your skills than the option to rock climb actual rocks in the outdoors may be even more exciting and rewarding.
Consider these alternatives to jogging either as stand alone exercise routines or part of a varied work out. The more variety and enjoyment you get from these exercises the more likely you are to continue doing them and achieving the results you desire.
