Feb 3, How To Run Naturally On A Treadmill

Treadmill running takes focus. It may not seem that way, but it does.

There are times when I have been on the treadmill and began thinking about other things only to forget my focus. I find myself on autopilot. This happens to me when my workout is not challenging enough.

If you have this trouble, you will want to pay attention to form and challenge yourself.

Do not simply run on the treadmill without thinking of your form. It is easy to lose because we tend to think of other things and get lost in our thoughts. It happens to all of us!

While thinking about form, challenge yourself. Doing a workout that allows you to lose focus is not one you want to continue. You will not get the same results because you will find yourself on autopilot letting your body go through the motions.

As you know already, that is not an effective workout. Instead, increase the incline and use the programs offered by your treadmill.

While the speed picks up, keep your head up and looking out. Your shoulders should be back and down. Hunching the shoulders can easily be an issue for all of us, but breathing and relaxing will help you.

Your arms should ideally swing gently, but not across your body. This movement actually wastes energy. It's better to keep the swing moving gently back and forth.

With your head up, shoulders down and back, and your hips facing forward you should be in very good alignment. Your alignment is important to your overall form and to an enjoyable workout.

Since you are on a machine you have to be careful not to misstep and fall, which could happen quite easily whether on a treadmill or if you were running outdoors.

Be sure to breathe from your belly. Belly breathing is a good way to relax and take in more oxygen to your lungs. Breathing will not only release tension, it will help you reduce shoulder hunching.

Running on a treadmill can be done comfortably and naturally as long as you pay attention to your form and breathe to relax your body as you challenge it to perform.

Feb 2, Best Mid-Price Treadmill

Buying a treadmill can be expensive. There are lots of choices and various price points, but this article focuses on the mid-price range.

Because fitness is a big deal to many of us (i.e., we are all still trying to stick with our New Year resolution!) owning a treadmill is a good idea. It is hands down the most popular piece of fitness equipment found in many American homes.

Treadmills are affordable since you can enjoy a range of prices from budget treadmills to the top-of-the-line treadmills found in hotels and resorts.

For most families though, one of the best mid-price treadmills to own is the Bow Flex Series 7 Treadmill.

The Bow Flex Series 7 treadmill is a great choice. It has a padded surface so you will not experience the same jarring motion on your joints unlike you would while running on a trail or pavement. Of course, it is still a good idea to change up your workouts by going out and running on a natural surface. It will help keep you motivated and interested in your workout routine.

Multiple running programs make owning a Bow Flex treadmill really cool. You can challenge yourself safely. This is terrific when you are doing interval or tempo runs to build your endurance and speed. Treadmill training can be a huge help when preparing for a half or full marathon.

I especially like my treadmill for this reason. I can conveniently get my endurance training in without worrying about inclement weather or running to the gym.

Gym memberships by the way are expensive. Owning a Bow Flex treadmill takes that expense off your budget. You will not have to wait for other members to get off the treadmill and possibly leave it yucky when you’re ready to jump on. Not being tied to a gym, for me at least, is a huge benefit to owning a treadmill. It frees me from the expense and commute.

The fold up feature is really useful. Save space in your living room, extra room or garage when you need to close up your treadmill. This way no one is tripping over it and it is out of your way until you want to get back on it.

Since weight loss is one of the driving reasons people buy treadmills, owning one will remove any barriers to losing those extra pounds. Now you can conveniently use your treadmill to burn off those indulgent dinners or calorie laden snacks. And, you won’t feel too badly because your treadmill is available to you whenever you need it!

All that is left to do is get your water bottle ready, a towel, throw on your Sauna Suit to speed weight loss, plug in your iPod and you are ready to get your jog on.

Regular exercise strengthens your heart, lungs, builds endurance and trims your waistline. These are all pretty good reasons to get a treadmill.

Feb 1, Jogging v. Running

You may ask yourself, is there a difference between jogging and running?

The answer is yes.

Jogging is considered “a form of trotting or running at a slow or leisurely pace” while running is a faster pace “which at regular points during the running cycle both feet are off the ground.”

Jogging is primarily done for fitness. It can be done by pretty much anyone in decent shape without injuries or certain medical conditions.

Running, on the other hand, is a competitive sport. It’s performed in the Olympics where the fastest man and woman are crowned winners of the 26.2 mile marathon. Elite runners who win this type of event and other running events typically complete a mile in 5 minutes.

What's amazing is that they maintain that 5-minute pace for the 2 hours it takes to finish a marathon.

I certainly couldn't do that!

The reality is, running is not something everyone can do. Most of us can run to get out of the rain or to our next appointment, but we’re not going to maintain that speed for long. It’s just too exhausting. People who do run regularly absolutely need to do it. It makes them happy and they feel good about themselves.

Jogging is something most of us can do. It’s an exercise that folks turn to when they want to lose weight, get into shape or lower their blood cholesterol. It’s free and is easy to begin. Jogging is really useful to athletes in a variety of sports from wrestling, boxing, football, etc. It helps performers build both cardio and muscular endurance which they need to improve their performance on the field or in the ring.

Fortunately, with training, joggers can become runners and achieve the speed they desire.

Jan 31, What Are The Disadvantages of Jogging?

There is no "perfect" exercise out there. You want to find an exercise that helps you achieve your goals, whatever they may be. And, naturally, each fitness routine has its
own drawbacks.

Here are few where jogging is concerned:

In no particular order...

Motivation. Like most aerobic activities you've got to have the get-up-and-go attitude.
If you don't, you'll find excuses why you can't or shouldn't exercise. Believe me, I struggle
with this, too. This is particularly true at the end of the day if that's the only time you
can fit in 30 or more minutes. Try exercising in the morning and if that's not possible, have your
gear ready when you do get home. This way you'll be more likely to just do it.

Injury. You can over do it and hurt yourself jogging. Some joggers experience overuse injuries
because they don't take off the needed time to allow their bodies to recover. This happens to those of us training for events. But if you're new to jogging, take it easy. This is important. If you're too excited to begin and don't pace yourself you could pull ligaments or muscles. You'll want to be careful of your pace as well. If you push yourself too hard, which can happen if you're doing interval runs, you could pull or tear muscles and not realize it until it's too late.
Yes, I've done this too and the recovery takes foooorrrrreeeevvverr.

Solitary. Jogging is often done alone. It can be done with friends, family or your dog, but lots of folks do tend to jog by themselves. This can be great when you just want your
"me time" but it can also be a bummer if you don't have a running buddy. Time will pass faster if you do hook up with a jogging buddy, which could really be anyone.

High impact. This is a high impact form of exercise. It gets results, but folks with pre-existing medical conditions really should seek their doctor's advice before beginning.
It goes without saying you should always check with your doctor first before undertaking any form of exercise. You certainly don't want to make things worse. There are a host
of medical conditions that don't work well with jogging (e.g. gout, arthritis, joint inflammation).

As I mentioned, there really is no perfect form of fitness. Simply find something you enjoy doing that you can commit to regularly. This way you'll get results and be happy with your
overall well being.

Jan 30, Benefits Of Jogging For Women

The benefits of jogging for women make jogging a worthwhile fitness exercise. If you don’t have joint problems, you’ll find this aerobic activity can help you with the following:

Weight loss. This is first and foremost the reason women get into jogging. We want results and we want them quickly. Of course, this is a natural method to losing weight without taking pills or some supplements that promise you’ll weight, but may cause you health problems later on.

Improved self-confidence. With weight loss comes self-confidence. If you’ve been chubby as a kid or just as a young adult and want to get the pounds off, jogging can help. Even as you get older and your metabolism slows down, you’ll find jogging is a great high energy fitness routine that can burn the fat. You’ll feel better about yourself as you see the pounds drop away and you can get into that pretty dress or those sexy jeans.

Decreased risk of diabetes. Women are just as likely to develop diabetes as men. And with the rise of diabetes over the last decade, jogging can help potential diabetics get control of their weight. Of course you’ll need to make better decisions about food, increase water intake and get your fitness on. The combination can really free you from diabetes which is a very scary disease to develop. Jogging can enable you to take back control of yourself. You can make it happen if you consistently work at jogging a little each day.

Lowered cholesterol and high blood pressure. With diabetes there seems to also be high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol. Research has shown you can combat both of these conditions by jogging regularly. Ladies, you want to get your sweat on and keep at it daily so you can benefit from lowered blood pressure and cholesterol.

Improved bone density. Women are particularly prone to osteoporosis and jogging is a weight bearing activity that can help. Jogging can minimize osteoporosis. Naturally Vitamin D and other weight bearing activities such as resistance training will all contribute to improve your bone density.

Jogging can be a great benefit to women if you don't have joint problems or other injuries. It's a great stress reliever, too, when you've had a terribly difficult day!

Jan 26, Jogging For Diabetics

Jogging for diabetics may not be the safest fitness exercise to perform.

Diabetics may face nerve damage due to uncontrolled blood sugar levels over time. Common symptoms include numbness, burning, pain, or tingling in the feet or legs.

If you are diabetic, talk with your doctor to see what kinds of exercises are safe for you to do. Jogging could create further problems for your feet or legs because of its high impact aerobics style. It's best to consider exercises that don't stress your feet as much such as...

swimming

biking

rowing

resistance training or weight lifting.

You'll want to push yourself to remain fit since exercise can help reduce health problems, but be gentle with your body. Talk with your doctor and get the okay from him/her before engaging in a fitness routine that could make more problems for you.

Jan 25, Used Jogging Strollers For Sale

Got one? They're certainly in demand. A jogging stroller really can make a difference for once active parents who have backed off of fitness due to starting a family (or adding to one!)

My Jeep Overland Limited jogging stroller was such a great help to me. My daughter enjoyed it and so did I.

I will say that a jogging stroller is great for families with more than one child. At least you'll get more use out of it. I found that after a little over 2 years, my daughter just didn't want to stay in it.

Getting out and exploring was more fun for her so it didn't make sense to keep it. If you're in a similar boat, consider listing it with jogging101.com at the link below.

And, if you're in the market for a used jogging stroller consider the following:

Check out your local Babies-R-Us and see how the stroller handles. Ask yourelf, is it the appropriate design for my child so that he/she has coverage from the sun? Doesn't make my child lean back too much? Is properly supported? Has a 5-point safety harness?

The jogging stroller should have rubber inflatable tires to handle road bumps, cracks or breaks in pavement. Regular strollers with hard plastic wheels are not sufficient or safe to use for jogging with your little one.

Used jogging strollers should still provide great support and safety to you and your child. They should have foot and hand brakes and not show excessive wear or damage to the wheels or frame.

Jogging strollers are great to have and last a while depending on your care of them. It's also a good idea to offer yours for sale if you no longer have a need for it so that other families can afford to purchase this cool fitness tool.

Jan 24, How To Start Jogging Again

Well, I am certainly in this boat. I have been off and on with jogging in the past year. Life has just gotten busier and making time for jogging has slipped away.

Yeah, I know it is a poor excuse, but life sometimes does get in the way. :-)

The good news is I can get started again. Jogging is fairly easy to begin. I have some pain with my left knee so I am not going to run full out. Instead, taking my time and getting the most out of my jogging workouts is important.

If you are starting jogging again after a lapse, take your time. Do not rush your speed or distance. Plan to commit to 30 minutes each day including a warm up and cool down. After you are feeling good about your progress add more time and distance. This could be a couple of weeks before you add onto your jogging.

Include some cross-training, too, a couple times a week. Consider Yoga to stretch your muscles. Yoga can help you become more limber and also break down lactic acid that builds up in our muscles from jogging.

Listen to your body. Give yourself a break if you find your joints bother you or you have pulled a muscle. You want to be fit but you do not want to injure yourself.

Sign up for a small running event. This will help you keep your training on track. You have got a goal to work towards and it’ll feel good when you accomplish it.

You can do a 5k or if you are feeling ambitious, like I am, sign up for a half marathon! You should be able to locate something in your area that is fun and rewarding.

Slowly but surely you can rebuild your jogging foundation. It will take time, but it will not be long before you are well on your way to jogging regularly again.

Jan 23, Jogging In The Winter

Jogging in the winter sounds like devotion to fitness or craziness. Whichever camp you fall into, jogging during the winter months is not such a bad idea.

Depending on where you live, your winter may not be all that bad. In California it gets rainy but not snowy. Joggers can essentially get out and jog anytime of day and not worry about below freezing conditions.

If you live in a snowy environment take some precautions.

Hydrate. Definitely drink more water. Your skin and hair will thank you as well as the rest of your body because colder weather means drier air. Lack of moisture means drinking water is necessary to replenish your system.

Dress in layers. You'll be cold at first and then warm up the longer you run. It's not practical to be bundled up and still move comfortably. Instead, wear thermal underclothes with a couple of layers on top that you can easily remove or put back on as needed.

Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm are necessary. Reflection from snow can be blinding so a good pair of sunglasses will help you minimize eye strain. Also, use sunscreen since you will be exposed to the sun's damaging rays. And, lip balm will help keep chaffed lips under control and moist. Don't chew at the dry skin on your lips as it'll only make things worse. Carry lip balm with you and use if frequently and generously.

Jogging in the winter can be a great break from indoor exercise. Just be careful that you don't jog too long and overexert yourself. Rest as needed and cross train to change up your routine.

Jan 11, Jogging Tips To Lose Weight

With the New Year brings hopes of melting the pounds we put on over the course of 2011.

Even if you didn't indulge--I applaud you!--you may still have some unwanted pounds you want to get rid of.

First off for jogging tips to lose weight, promise yourself you'll drink more water. This is a small
change that we can incorporate into our daily lives with very good results. More water means you're flushing your body of toxins. That's a good thing! It also helps to act as an appetite suppressant. If your belly's full of water you won't be able to fit much into it. It can be helpful to drink a glass of water before
sitting down to have dinner for example.

Second, make your jogs count. You don't have to run for miles or hours at one time. Unless of course you're training for a marathon or half marathon.

Generally, though, you can really extract greater benefits from your jogs when you really push yourself during the 30 or 40 minutes you allot for your workout. Instead of jogging a 12 minute mile which can be a comfortable pace, push yourself to jog a 10 minute mile and maybe even an 8 minute mile. You'll surprise yourself and your body. Keep your muscles guessing and they won't come to expect the same hum drum workout. You'll force your heart and lungs to work harder along with all of your muscles.

Another tip is to consider the
Sauna Suit
to wear as part of your jogging attire. You can wear this whenever you're jogging outside or indoors on the treadmill. I use a sauna suit on the treadmill at home. It's great to use and gets inches off relatively quickly, but remember it is water you're eliminating from your body. You'll sweat a lot and probably more than you might if you didn't wear it. You'll really want to hydrate before and after using it because you'll feel pretty drained. It's a good idea to drink something with electrolyte replacement such as Gatorade afterwards.

Of course, too, you'll want to eat regularly and often in small portions throughout the day. Get some protein and carbs in your belly every 2 or 3 hours. This way you'll keep your blood sugar stable (no drops mean no late afternoon sugar cravings) and stay on track to eat healthy.

These jogging tips to lose weight can help get those stubborn pounds off your waist and hips. The key is to keep at it, make these small changes and track your progress.

Jan 10, Incorporating Muscular Endurance In Your Life

In order to enjoy jogging or cardio exercises you should develop your muscular endurance. With stronger muscles you'll perform better if you participate in running events and you'll last longer when you jog.

You can incorporate muscular endurance into your life by doing some simple exercises.

If you're working in an office, extend your legs straight out while sitting in your chair. Hold that position for 15 second and repeat 20 times.

Add tempo runs to your workouts. Tempo runs are 20 to 40 minutes of jogging at a pace that's 10 to 20 seconds per mile slower than your 10-K pace. Doing this three times each week (resting between these days) will increase your muscular endurance.

You can also do 5 minutes of single-leg hops, two-legged bounding, and high-knee skipping, all on a soft surface such as grass or packed dirt. Do these once or twice a week to challenge your muscles.

Lifting weights or using resistance bands will also build your endurance. Perform weight lifting or resistance training slowly, focusing on the muscles you're developing.

Lastly, if you do long runs each week be sure to run hard and fast at your goal pace for the last quarter of your jog. You shouldn't collapse afterward but definitely be tired. Running this way will get your body used to this demand.

Incorporating some of these suggestions will help you build muscular endurance and you'll experience less fatigue.

Jan 9, Benefits of Jogging - Feeling Good About Yourself

Exercise generally is good for all of us. There aren't that many people who can get by without doing some kind of regular fitness. I mean, how can you look good and feel great if exercise isn't a part of your day?

There are those people blessed with fabulous figures, flat bellies and trimmed hips. But, there are many more of us who need to work out.

There are many benefits of jogging, but for me I find working toward a goal (an achievable one) makes me feel good about myself. I also like losing weight, toning muscles and just being able to keep up with my daughter. She has a boundless source of energy, which if I could harness it, I would be 10x more productive than I am!

Jogging regularly will help you with weight loss and/or weight maintenance, improved cardiorespiratory endurance, stronger muscles so you can jog further and a sense of personal achievement.

It might be worth beginning jogging if you've tried other kinds of fitness and they haven't worked out. Get together with some friends and begin jogging a few times a week. Before you know you'll begin to see the results of your efforts while also enjoying time with your friends.

Jan 5, New Year New Running Shoes

If you're new to jogging or running, one of your very first steps to get off on the right start, is to purchase a good pair of running shoes.

The decision is an important one. If you buy jogging shoes without evaluating what's best for your feet, you'll end up with something that's uncomfortable.

Bad jogging shoes that either don't fit properly or simply rub too much in one area, will put you off your fitness goals.

I'm a huge fan of New Balance. I enjoy my running shoes because they offer great support to my feet with minimal blisters or discomfort. Your feet need to feel good so you can increase your distance if that's a goal for you.

Adidas, Nike, Mizuno or Asics are all great choices for running shoes. Getting off to a good start means getting the right shoes on your feet. Your joints will thank you!

Jan 4, Jogging And My New Year's Resolution

Those pesky New Year resolutions have surfaced again. What resolutions have you adopted for 2012?

Better health.

I've been off and on (or in and out) of the jogging scene these past months. Life has gotten busy with work, family and websites. And, of course, the inactivity or lack of consistentcy has caused weight gain.

Ugh. I really hate that I need to lose "a few pounds" which if I'm honest, is a lot more than 10 pounds. I've got real work ahead of me and I know it ain't gonna be easy.

But I'll be on my treadmill burning calories these next several weeks and hopefully getting off that "sweet train" of desserts, candies all that holiday stuff....
